What is search engine marketing?
Search engine marketing (SEM) is paid search. When you search for something in Google, Yahoo! or Bing, the top results will typically have a yellow background. Those are the paid ads. Similarly, the right sidebar will also show paid search listings. If you included a city name in your Google search, the local search results will be directly beneath the paid ads. Below that, and below the visible page, is the organic search results. Ongoing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will get you to the top of the organic results.
How do you get listed at the top?
The easiest way is to buy the ad space. The paid search results are shown on a Cost Per Click (CPC) basis. The ads are purchased on a bid basis. The most relevant results can bid less, the less relevant ads can still show, but the bid amount will be much higher.
