How to transfer a domain name

  1. Log in to your current domain registrar.
  2. Make sure all of your administrative contact information is up to date.
  3. Unlock the domain name.
  4. Make sure the domain name has been registered with the same registrar and hasn’t been transferred for at least 60 days.
  5. Request authorization code – this will be sent to the administrative contact email address, not the technical contact.
  6. Log in to new domain registrar.
  7. Fill out form for domain transfer including the domain name and authorization code.
  8. Checkout. Cost is usually the same as a one year registration. This will add one year on to your registration length.
  9. The old administrative address will get a confirmation email. Click the link or otherwise confirm the transfer.
  10. Update the name servers to they are pointing to the correct location. Some registrars will allow you to do this with the transfer pending. Having the correct name servers set up right away will prevent the website from going down during the transfer.
  11. Length of time for the transfer will depend on the old registrar. The transfer will usually take place within 7-10 days, but can take much longer. You will be able to check the status by logging into either the old or new registrar. The transfer can be canceled at any time during the first 7-10 days.
